United Way makes significant funding cuts to Scouts

The United Way allocation supporting the council's inner city program known as ScoutReach will fall from $95,220 to $20,000 annually. The 2008-2009 allocation had already been reduced by $3,170 following last fall's United Way campaign season. We anticipated a sharp reduction, but did not know it would be nearly the entire allocation. We still receive donor designations which are budgeted at $122,000 this year.

o If you have given to the Heart of Virginia Council through your UW donation, please consider making a direct donation, which would result in 14% more of your dollars supporting Scouting.

o If you plan to continue to make donations via UW, please ensure that you designate using our code #2416 to direct your donation to Scouting.

ScoutReach is a method of delivering the Scout program to youth in difficult to serve areas.  About 1,400 youth participate in Scouting through ScoutReach.  We continue to see good results through ScoutReach and recently saw a boy earn the Eagle Scout Award, the highest badge in Scouting.

Thank you for your support!
